Just Because... I like it

My practice is concerned with pattern making and design. I work through the mediums of drawing and print they follow this specific sequence as the drawings support and inform my print work. I use drawing as a form of documentation, the method of drawing demands time and dedication. I become fixated in the amount of detail in the subject matter that I almost become obsessed.  I invest a huge amount of labour in my pencil drawings to achieve very dark tonal areas, so that the intensity of the pencil almost appears to be pure black, my drawings almost become prints as they are made up of large areas of flat block colour. The idea of copying and repetition are prominent aspects in my work as I am able to make multiple editions of work using print, as each design is a copy but within a different format. I also use printing as a way to experiment with different colour combinations and layouts. My print work highlights the layers that have been created to make up the patterns. I use layers to create regimented patterns that focus on order and repetition that suggest no work of the hand as the original pencil has been removed, as opposed to using layers in an experimental manner that create distortion and confusion. In these pieces you are able to see the imperfections of the hand. My pattern work shows the relationship between the hand and technology. I find it intriguing how everything is made up of a type of pattern I could not imagine a world without pattern. Although my work is very much two dimensional I do feel that my pattern designs almost express a three dimensional aspect as patterns have many layers that you find yourself lost in.
